Hey guys,

I’ve looked through different forums and was trying to find someone with a similar problem without any luck.
I have six 3 ish month old chicks and the two that are lavender Orpington have what looks like split ends on their feathers? The other chicks that are different breeds don’t seem to have this problem. I’ve looked specifically for mites and didn’t see any either.

Is this a type of feather breed thing I didn’t know about? Or is it some kind of protein deficiency? I didn’t think protein really affected feathers once they were already formed? Maybe they just need a bath?

Any suggestions are helpful! Thanks!

I have a lavender Orpington too and it is just something that is unique to the lavender feather gene. I have read a little bit about it and it is common with the lavender Orpington, mine has split feathers also and there’s nothing you can do about it.

OMG, thank you! Haha I was like, what am I doing wrong/missing? I had no idea about that. Thank you so much for sharing

We only have one now but we used to have four Brahma hens and their feathers were also like this, even after a moult.

Not all their feathers, but a few...

There was some on the sides of their neck and tips of their tail.

Maybe it is colour related?

I asked also, when my OEGB's feathers looked strange.
They have improved some, but I'm sure they will never be as smooth as our other guy.
First three pics are our new boy
