i have just done some research and found one of my new Silkie chicks has split wing. Unfortunately I can’t find much information about if this is an actual problem. My chickens are not for breeding they’re simply for eggs and being pets. Some posts I read said the bird needs to be culled? Is this necessary if I’m not breeding to sell them? Thanks!

Culling simply means taking them out of your flock, which usually means rehoming unless they have a serious disease, when it means to kill them. Split wing is just one of the defects that may disqualify them in poultry shows. Since some defects can be passed on to offspring, I would not breed her.

Since I do not breed or show birds, I could care less if a bird has a minor defect if it was a good chicken. Many backyard flocks from hatcheries or breeders have some sort of defect. Breeders usually will not part with a show quality bird.
