I give my chickens worms--not interested. Caterpillars. They turn up their noses. And this morning, melon.

Mine are foodies. They are 8 weeks on Sunday. They have tried small bits of watermelon, cantaloupe, black fly larvae, zucchini, cucumber and fresh mint, thyme, basil, sage, mint,marigolds! They go crazy for it all! I did hear bantam Cochins are extremely food motivated… but, WOW! This definitely appears to be true.

Mine primarily free range, so maybe they're just not bored enough to try something new.

This was just the stuff they turned their noses up at today! Pieces of a peach are still scattered around the yard from yesterday.

Lucky chicks! They must have plenty of delicious bugs to snack on. My girls are almost 8 weeks and still bopping around on the back deck. The are hilarious trying to chase bugs with their short bantam legs. They eat everything their plump little bodies come across. I think it’s the newness of everything too. Perhaps they will acquire specific tastes soon enough.

They won't touch any kind of brassica. I found that out within a few months.

I'm based in the UK and it can be difficult to get high protein starter crumb. I've been adding crushed hemp seeds to the mix to improve the protein levels, the quail go mad for the little dark crumbs in their feed. The birds are not getting high. They also have thyme, rosemary, lavender, sage, mint, calendula and chamomile in their dust bath. The birds smell gorgeous and peck about for little herby treats.

*(Hemp is not illegal in the UK. Hemp seed doesn't contains the psychoactive chemical, THC).

I recently got a 6 months old Pekin rooster from rooster surrender people. They told me he was surrender when he was a chick.

He only eat chicken feed, no matter whatever else I offer him. No to egg york, egg white, pasta, beans, sunflower, corns, sardine, ..I am sure he would eat earth worms but I have not seen it as he is not well so he is not outside on the ground long enough to dig up for worm.
