You can buy the sportsman 250W heating element with insulators for $16..If you want to go that route.

They are not quite the same.

I would have bought the Johnson if I had found one cheap enough. The Ranco I have is the expensive one .... it is two stage, and will control heating and cooling at the same time. That was useful for the original purpose, but not needed for this application.

For incubator use I would buy the single stage, which is very similar to the Johnson 419.

Next time, I will use a PID controller for the incubator, with a T-Type thermocouple. That will give a high degree (sic) of accuracy, and, as a bonus, take account of fluctuations in ambient temp. Now THAT is environmental control

The heat rope I can't remember ...... I remember it was $20, shipped, and would have to Google to find it again. Shouldn't be too hard.

I've got the plans and it looks very easy to build and use. One thing I would like to do is to add melamine panels for the inside for easy clean ups so you would not have just wood exposing to possible diseases from one's flock.

I will have my father and hubby take a look at it and see if it is festible to use and will try it with the Hovabator guts I've had. Or use that same pattern for a dorm refigerator.

The Hovabator heater is too small.

Get a 125W rope heater, at least.
