set the trap, after catching one, reset the trap, you may be amazed at how many and much of different types of varmints are out there.

Raccoons out in daylight that exhibit no fear of humans are either sick or very very hungry.

If the critter is sick you have two likely choices rabies or distemper.

Call the wildlife folks or animal control and report what happened.
