spouses and Chickens

Guess I am one of the lucky ones. I said, 'Let's get chickens'. (I wanted them mostly cause of the eggs since prices are outrageous here.) And he said, 'okay'. We both looked at what kind to get to start with, and of course our ds had to pick some, too. Now that we have them he asked when I was getting more. We thought of getting another dozen, we have 31 now, but then Big Momma, one of our barred roacks, decided to get broody with about 3 dozen under her. We had to get rid of about 10 the other night, nothing when candled. Dh just said okay, well we'll get those in the spring then. (We have to order in the spring anyway for ds fair project.) So, come spring I will have at least 45-50 chickens and chicks, as long as nothing happens to them. Gotta love the man. Oh, yeah. Forgot that he is planning on building a new barn for goats and sheep. He said,'you'll be able to put a bunch of chicks in there.'!

DH had a very bad experience chicken sitting for friends long ago, so it took nearly 20 yrs until I could convince him to try our own small flock. He slowly began taking an interest in how to clean, what to feed, when to feed and water and when to let them in and out "just in case" I'm not able to.

I now find him in the yard in the evening, throwing the bumper for our lab to retrieve while watching and "talking " to the girls, and on weekends he's quick to help me with chicken chores.

He's hooked!

My DH was less than enthused with the idea but finally caved back in May. He did put our pre-fab coop together and he did do a good job predator-proofing it, but grumbled the whole way.

I think he secretly thinks they are OK now, especially after he watched them challenge a squirrel in our backyard recently.

He grumbles less and will go out and lock up their pen at night if I don't get to it first. Maybe he'll like them even more when they start laying!

I see that my DH (schmism) has already been on here posting about me. It's true... I didn't want chickens. Then when the first two were 'forced' onto us by a neighbor, they quickly grew on me. I can't believe how fun they are! Now I'm the one who hangs out in the yard with them and talks to them and gives them treats.

Now he's trying to talk me into goats. So far I've resisted, but I'm afraid it's just a matter of time...

Im just blessed i guess. MY Dh likes the chickens!! but he is not so fond of my show birds i had caged. he just wants free range layers. i think we should have both. but with feed prices what they are the layers may have to pay for the others.

My sweetheart thinks these chickens are going to be a passing fad in my life... that it's my mid-life crisis.

We ended up with one Delaware roo out of the 19 that lived and she is VERY happy that we found him another home. Now she keeps asking, When are we going to get some eggs?

She's not converted yet and I seriously doubt I'll ever get her to do chicken chores, but I can hope can't I?

She does watch our boys take care of and admire the chickens and she likes that they have chores to do in taking care of them... so who knows she may eventually convert.

Although my DH & I were gun-ho about our chickens and coop/run building, our Moms were in same mind frame - "They both are going through a mid-life crisis!"

Time will only prove them wrong -

My cutie had chickens when she was a kid and hated them,"they are mean,Blah,Blah,Blah". Thought she was going to have a melt down 3 years ago when we got 25. Or when I bought 2 incubators.Or when I bought Easter Eggers that lay GREEN! eggs. Or Last year when I bought 100 chicks. We do sell pullets, she did suggest that we buy 100 Buffs pullets in May. The difference was that the chickens when she was a kid were not free-ranging but kept penned in a 4x20 run. Now chickens are equal to the other animals. It was not good when I posted the 3 year-old hens for sale. Never knew she was so lippy or that her eyebrows were so bold! Didn't even know all those chickens had defferent names.

I am very lucky. My dear husband spent all last summer constructing the most beautiful new divided coop, covered run and attached shed for my girls. When I came home with 12 new babies (for the new digs) he looked at them and said....where are the buffs? They are your favorites? Better go back and get more.......well, you don't have to tell me twice......welcome 3 more babies.

I sure do love him........

I know my husband really DOES love me because he let me get chickens, and even helped me bring a used pigeon hutch home to remodel for our chicks.

I know he really DOES like the chickens because my friend Michelle said every time she calls he mentions the chicks or says he's playing with them.

He named them all -- we even have one named after his WOW partner, Tawny.
