My hubby ordered some Silver Dorkings and they arrived this AM. Hubby picked them out because he read they are great moms, and we want to be able to reproduce our own flock the old fashioned way, with our hens doing the work.
One of our 2 SD's is slighly spraddle legged. When I say spraddle, it's nowhere near as bad as the pictures I found online. I discovered this later, after watching them awhile. That one just seemed smaller at first, then I thought it's legs were shorter, but then I noticed it's legs were splayed out wider than the rest of the chicks. I saw the page with the pictures using the band-aid. We tried that for about 10 minutes. Poor thing was jumping around- that's all it could do. I tried putting it back in the brooder, but it just hopped til it was tired and fell asleep, narcoleptic little things. So we took the band aid off. It's getting around fine, just a bit more wobbly than the others. But it's hopping, running, moves as much as the others, just more of a waddle.
Think I should give the band-aid another try? It can support it's weight, it can walk, eat & drink. I just worry that it might be a problem later, since once it's an adult and down in the coop with the other birds (5 Golden Comet hens, 2 Buff Brahma roos, some Golden Comet- Langshan/Maran eggs in the incubator right now- I know crazy mixes we will have....)
Who knows, it might die overnight? I only got 2 of the SD's, and I don't really wanna lose one, ya know? They're cute little fuzzy things.
