I just went and checked my can of Sevin dust, and it does not even say it is for critters anymore! Maybe it is just this particular brand. I have used 5% Sevin on dogs and cats for ever. I would say the eggs would be ok to eat if the chickens are dusted with 5% sevin. I certainly agree with Pat and Chickens, and ask you to please don't spray the chickens with liquid sevin. It is very poisonous, just doesn't have a long residual effect.
Well I think it will be my first and last sevin experiment. It is 5% I also have DE. And I also have bees. Forgot I had to mess with the bees this evening. I washed good and changed clothes, wore gloves when I did the birds.
I searched sevin on here and came up with a thread describing it as a carcinogen. I dusted my little chihuahua with it until we got our first case of sand fleas (which it is 100% ineffective on), and she never got cancer. And I mean weekly, for years. But with a beehive to care for, if DE will work it is just safer.
Thank you for your reply. I'll wash my eggs well. don't know if they have mites or not, but I've never dusted with anything and wild birds do visit my yard now and then, sparrows used to raid the chicken's feeder in the run til I took the 1" chicken wire over my heavy wire all the way up. Still get one stuck in there now and then.
Like you, I'm a newbie to this as well! However, if you do a little "pecking" around the web, you'll find that everyone who uses this product swears by it!
100% Food Grade diatomaceous earth
You will have to put "FOOD GRAD DIATOMACEOUS EARTH" into the search engine...the 100% will not work.
If you don't get FOOD GRADE, you will be killing your birds, however so this is imperative.
Home Depot, Lowes, Tractor Supply, Southern States, to name but a few have this on stock!
