Spring 2017 first timers post!

I had a few chicks get pasty butt- assuming stress related. I washed their butts in luke warm tap water then, with my fingers, wiped coconut oil down their backside. Not one issue with pasty butt since, and that was two weeks ago... and a few of them were a little lethargic for a few days, also, I think, from stress... you know, born, shipped to feed store, shoved in container, picked by us, driven home, and put in a new pad... It's a lot to take in your first few days of life. =) Some good love, a heat lamp, food and water will go a long way. Keep us updated though!

Congrats on great selections, and enjoy them! I have a 8.5 year old daughter and 3.5 year old son... they LOVE our chicks and, like yours, wanted some that lay pretty eggs... we now have 2 Amber Whites, a Sicilian Butter Cup, a Speckled Sussex and 2 EE's... Lots of good color!

Depending on how we do with these ones, we may get a few more next year and try a few different breeds as well. My daughter wants to join 4H either this summer or next, so if that happens, she'll get a new chick to raise and show.

How fun!!! I find the Lavender Ameraucanas to be stunning! My daughter is heavy in to dance, but we will look further into 4H when my son get a s little older. Super exciting!

I wish my goofy Easter Eggers knew that.....so far I've raised a total of 10 and not one green egg in the bunch. <sigh> I keep hoping....shoot, I even got an Olive Egger looking for that elusive green egg, and she lays brown.

The rest all lay blue or bluish green. MY KINGDOM FOR A TRUE GREEN EGG!! (actually I've seen my kingdom....it ain't that hot!

)

I have had 3 and all of them have laid green eggs: mint or light olive colored. I wish I had a blue egg layer though! But I am trying to cut back on my chicken purchases after this Spring, since I'll be moving next year and I won't be able to bring the chickens. But I console myself with the thought that my new place will have lots more room for chickens.

So, last night after we brought some more chicks home, we put the 8 older chicks in a larger, blue plastic tote box to give them a little more room. We also put the seven new normal size chicks in one. Then we put the three little bantams into the smaller tin container we had first used for the original 8. Anyway, we noticed the 8 older chicks did a lot of scratching in the wood chips and pecking at the floor of the tote. The seven newer chicks did this too. The bantams just sat in their tin box chilling. Are chickens bothered by either the color blue, plastic or something else here, or is this just them exercising their natural foraging instinct?

First time getting chicks. What do I need to have on hand (I live in the country not close to any stores. Of course I have brooder, shavings, chick starter. Curious if I need electrolytes, vitamin B, Nutri-Drench, Poule-vit, etc...

This is my first time raising Chicks, though I have had chickens before they came to me grown. I have quickly become the crazy chicken lady to all my friends! Haha

Today my husband brought home 3 more chicks. These come to me because the public school system thinks it's a good idea to hatch eggs & send the students home with a chick! A man he works with knew I was raising chicks & asked if I would take in the chick his son brought home....some how 1 turned into 3...Chick math!
Problem is I don't know what kind i they are. I know one is a RIR....not sure about the other two! Help! One is really light yellow...almost white! The other is the cutest black & white chick ever!

Attempting the MHP! A few meaties and a layer got "lost" since this picture was taken and I had to put them back under the MHP. Hopefully they don't get all confused again, it'll be mighty cold tonight!

I can't get any pics to load for some reason, but my babies are getting wing tip feathers already! They were shipped to SS on Sunday, so I was thinking they should be 5 days old. Would I be right in that thinking?
