Spring 2017 first timers post!

Love your brooder!  We don't see a MHP so are you using a heat lamp?  The 2 white pipes across the box, pvc?BB said these looked like wooden dowels)  For roosting or ?

Today we finish the coop, yipee, pictures this afternoon, hopefully.  Also today we plan on setting up our brooder.  We have tested our MHP and we "think" it is good to go.  Planning on using corrugated Kraft paper for the perimeter of the brooder.  Will only be used for less than a week till we move the children to the coop BUT after seeing your box brooder we may reconsider.

Again, great job, neighbor!  TBC, BB

Yes, we have a heat lamp. Since they are in our enclosed dining room they are warm enough. They have lots of feathers now too. No signs of being cold. Those are wood dowels for roosts. About eight chicks always roost now. Since i knew the chicks were going to be in our house for six weeks i had to build something sturdy and big. And something easy to clean. The chicks and me have to be happy. We made a lot of progress on our coop this weekend. We just have the doors, vents, pop door on the outside to do. Next the run and then the roosts, nests, and poop board. So two more weeks should do it. I have to dust twice a day my table, chairs, and window sill in the dining room. 19 chicks make a lot of dust!

I hope your brooder works. One week is not long so what you are doing sounds good.

Look forward to seeing your pics!

We mde lots of progress on getting our metal shed onto our fondation today. We got everything but the doors on. Tomorrow we will do those and cut the vent holes and pop door hole and maybe get those finished too! I figure two weeks we will have it ready for our then six week old chicks. Sure hope to since they keep me busy dusting!

I'm new but have had chicks for 6 weeks (19 of them) Our chicken house ( too big to call coop haha) has been in the works for a few weeks hopefully finished this weekend! I went from using a tote to 2 totes to swimming pool to adding fence around the pool. Told my hubby I'm going to need another pool if we don't finish the house this week. And they are in my living room!! Ahhh lol here are some pics..

Just wanted to show progress on the coop. Not completely done, but liveable since they were getting pretty crowded in the kiddie pool.

LOL! I have to say i did the same thing. 19 chicks are in our dining room. I told hubby if we don't get the coop done in two weeks i will have to build a second brooder in the living room and put nine in one and ten in the other. He took a day off work and has worked on it with me all weekend too. I look forward to getting them out in their little home two weeks from now. The dusting is crazy! But they are so cute!

Omg tell me about it! I've been dusting for 2 days and still haven't gotten it all. We were changing our air filter every few days with vacuuming the current one between. Our ac unit keeps feezing up because the filter stays nasty. Lol but i just love them. Work of love... haha

Finally it's getting closer, coops done (mostly I owe it a 2nd coat of paint) and the brooder is just about finished chicks arriving a week from Wednesday. Weather will be in the high 60's with lows in the 40's. Brooding in the coop, I may have to sleep out there too! lol, its big enough.

We got our front doors on and also got the cables on to hold it in case of wind. Then we cut the pop up door. Below is a little video clip of the door hole being cut. One step closer!!!

We added our chicken coop pop up door hole today to our metal shed. We cut it out and are ready to trim it with wood. I will post the finished trim and working door soon.

So I had a minor change of plans. I ended up getting 6 (+1 more the next day) this past Friday. Barred Rock, Sagitta, Ameraucana, Buff Brahma, Dark Brahma, and then I had a Buff Orpington. It seemed to be the odd Chick out, so I bought another Buff Orpington the next day. They all came from my local feed store. They seem to be doing really well and thriving well. Fingers crossed that they keep doing well. :)

Update:
So I have 19 laying chicks now (original 13 and then another 6 I got this past week) also 4 that we are raising for meat
The 2 ducks multiplied into 4 after a visit to Tractor Supply and we are getting 2 geese and 2 turkeys that will arrive the week after easter.

The oldest (4 weeks) are living in the spare bathroom and are getting too big for the brooder but the coop isn't ready yet and its too cold outside for them at night not sure what I am going to do with them until we can get some heat out there. We had placed the younger chicks with the older ones but there were problems so I had to separate them into their own brooder. Now we have 3 brooders (Older chicks, younger chicks and meat birds, and Ducks)

My family believes that I am crazy but they are enablers so we are happy.
The little babies 4 weeks ago have changed so much I heard someone refer to this stage as the ugly stage tho I still think they are still pretty in their own way tho scruffy looking and their little cheeps have changed not quite clucks yet but getting there.
I will share pics of them tomorrow and maybe the coop
