Spring 2017 first timers post!

Some of the neighborhood kids came to visit my chicks and had found a cricket to throw in. You'd have thought it was Christmas day! They wen't nuts over it The kids thought it was the best thing they had ever seen. I expect they will be showing up with more "treats" anytime now.

Quick question for those of you whom are initiated.
After how long do you usually feed the processed starter before switching over to au natural, et al?

After how long do you usually feed the processed starter before switching over to au natural, et al?

My plan is after the first 25# bag of medicated starter feed to switch to a 20% protein feed from there forward with oyster shells and grit on the side.

Only 10 days in right now though

Here is one of my 2 New Hampshire Reds. Check out her new tail feathers!!

This was taken Sunday 4/9 when she was 14 days old.

Merrymouse said it was okay to name this chick after her, BTW.

I did not see your sick chick thread until just this afternoon as I have only been following this thread and the Mama Heating Pad thread.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery for your little one. You have been doing an awesome job!

My limping BO, Margie, appears to have made a full recovery and was running with the bigger chicks today just fine.

Amazing size difference in my chicks at 14 days old...6 big ones and 5 little ones without any signs of tail feathers.

We let everyone out in the run for a hour this morning and offered them another turn out this afternoon and wouldn't you know it, the 6 big ones came out and the 5 littles snoozed, 3 under the MHP and 2 on top.

Finally had a sunny, breeze less day today!

Another question about feed, right now my 3.5 week old Black Australorps are on starter mash, and I'm told at 6 weeks to switch to a growing formula, but NOT a quick-grow formula (for meat birds) but my local feed store calls its grow formula 'quick grow' and doesn't seem to have two options...

Are there any particular brands/types of food people recommend for the 6-12 week stage, that I can look for on-line?

Also, on a side note, its amazing how fast the little boogers grow, I swear they get bigger between breakfast and lunch, and they just started getting their little combs!!

Decided that a bit of lazy can't hurt too much....so I set up the AutoFeed Station. Had 2 "broken" game feeders that I made into 1 and now have mounted it on outside of coop. It's set with light sensor to start just after dawn, then every 6 hours till dark.

And, it'll keep Fatso (forefront) from laying down to eat

I've only had my chicks since yesterday, but a couple already have wing feathers growing in?! I didn't know they grew in so quick. My little yellow chick (Meyer Mealmaker) had pasty butt this morning. Thanks to some advice in the emergency section she is now all cleaned up and appears to be back to normal (although she never acted differently). I think I caught it early enough. My dog and I have been watching these girls almost nonstop. I have also given my chicks names.

Your Meal Maker looks a lot like my New Hampshire Red chicks.

hmm, I will have to look them up. I thought they were a reddish color as chicks. Mine is all yellow with pale legs.
