Spring 2017 first timers post!

I'm laughing at myself for the excessive use of duct tape

. The bottle is secured wth zip ties, elastic bands but then I had to add just a little duct tape to be sure it didn't fall down and hurt my chicks. Talk about over protective

I love it!! I'm making a few of these this weekend for the coop. So happy to see a bottle one like I was planning to make... didn't want to do the bucket version. Thanks!

Yesterday, day 2 at home, we added a shoe box lid filled with sand, peat moss and wood stove ash to the brooder. It was an instant big hit, not so much for dust bathing but for scratching and pecking.

They love the dirt and they will dust bathe soon. Mine really get into it. They practically roll onto their backs to cover themselves. When they get a bit bigger you can graduate to the bottom part of a show box vs the lid because they will kick that dirt everywhere and the taller sides will help a bit. This is a picture of the day I moved them up to the big box of dirt. Yes, all nine chicks wanted in on the action at once!

Well here's an update on that whole mess! We ordered two crested cream legbar and turns out that we only really received one. It had no sign of a crest when she arrived, completely non existent until about two weeks in maybe. Then a little bit of feathery puff filled in and it's grown very quickly. What we thought was or ur other was just really far behind but as the weeks went on (now at five weeks) we noticed a change in color and no crest, plus it's a boy! So I contacted my pet chicken and it turns out they accidnelty sent us either a male welsummer or light brown Leghorn.
Also not all breeds of legbars have crest, but a cream one will always have one and it should show up around two weeks at least.
The other breeds of legbar do not lay Blue eggs though.
Uh-oh. My two crested cream leg bar chicks are three and a half weeks old, and today is the first day I think I can see a crest developing, but it is ever so slight and may be wishful thinking on my part. The two of them look identical to each other and I ordered them from a smaller poultry breeder, so I am hoping they are just slow developers!

UPDATE: We moved the original 13 into the coop today!! its not fully finished still need to finish their run and put the door to the run in but for now until we get to that on saturday or sunday they are fine in just the main coop. Haven't gotten nesting boxes yet but they are not even close to laying. I took them all outside in a pet carrier and they were cheeping their heads off to get out and then when I opened the door they ran out in one big huddle and then just stopped and were like "Dorthy when did we leave Kansas?" was so cute watching them walk around the edge in just one little huddle I don't think they know what to do with so much room.
This is the whole coop its a 9' X 10' space and if you look in the left corner you can see them all huddled together

the gray box is a heater I put out there for them it is suspended from the rafters and anchored so its not on the floor and not gonna swing around if they get crazy or something and make it move.

seems like so much space for them tho I know they are not done growing yet

In 10-12 days I should have 4 fluffy chicks! I am so excited. Hopefully, this weekend I can finish painting the base to the coop, put flooring tiles in the coop, put the coop on its base in the permanent spot, and start building the run. Also need to get some gardening stuff done. Tomorrow I pick up my chick feed.

It's looking like we have a pullet welsummer, a pullet light brown Leghorn and another (pullet/cockerel?) either a Welsummer or Leghorn. Have had multiple options on what they are. I'm happy either way. We love them if it's a boy or a girl. I definitely got lucky on the welsummer and Leghorn both being pullets, even if I didn't get my second crested legbar I'm still excited to see what my mystery bird is. Looks like both the welsummer and Leghorn but not exactly like them at the same time

Sorry
'Opinions' not options! If I had the option I'm not sure I'd rather take the pullet or the cocker. Welsummer roosters are known to be very pretty and usually friendly, while I've heard light brown leghorn rooster are pretty they tend to be mean. At least that's what I've read. I'm hoping if we get a surprise rooster that our black Ameraucana stays looking like a pullet since we wouldn't loose a egg layer that way. With a pullet of each welsummer and Leghorn I am happy though :)

Some think I actually have two welsummer pullets and one light brown Leghorn, that's why one has such a larger comb than the other two. It's also got some pink but no red or waddles yet. But the two pullets in question are different in color (chest & wings), so I'm still not sure they are both welsummer. Anyone know if two welsummer pullets can look different by much?

I wouldn't worry to much. You'll know by the time they are 5 weeks for sure. Did you buys crest cream legbar or another breed of legbar?
