Spring 2017 first timers post!

We still have no coop... However, I built a 4x8 'tween size run to get them outside in the meantime:

I'm pondering making a 'tween size coop (4x4) to give us a couple of more months to finish an actual coop (and practice framing before It Matters!)... chicken book says that should be ok up to 16 weeks. My husband thinks I'm crazy ("What are we going to do with an extra tiny coop in the yard???"), but I'm pretty excited about the project.

Can you make the run secure? Tarp it off on 3 sides, make some roosts and leave them there until big coop done?

We could--I'm worried about predators digging in from the bottom, though. We definitely have foxes for example (we plan to put buried hardware cloth under the whole bottom of our full run). Although, if we're leaving them in the tween run for more than a few hours, we'd probably have to put a hardware cloth skirt around it at least so the animals can't get in.

We are 1st timers this spring too! Right now we have 3 rescue chicks of unknown breed / origin, but they're cute and seem happy. My husband should hopefully have the coop and run finished soon.

Just FYI, it is really useful to have a small extra coop in the yard in case you have chickens that need to be kept separate. You could use it for quarantining new birds or sick birds, or for keeping new chicks in before you combine them with your older chickens. Just saying.

Just got my first round of chicks! We used to buy grown chickens, but I'm so glad we decided to go with young ones this time! 2 Ameraucanas, 2 goldens, 2 speckled Sussex, 1 silver Wyandotte, and 1 black copper maran
