Hi there.
I hatched out about 15 mixed chickens in the spring. They've been healthy until recently. They all eat, get plenty of water and do not fight. There are 2 rabbits around them. They are 4 months old.

2 weeks ago I had a hen start acting off. It was my mistake to not quickly notice the severity. She started going up to roost much later than others. But she would still eat and drink. Than one day she couldn't really stand up. Her balance was off. Her eyes would close and open slowly. She had no signs of injury whatsoever. No spasms, no convulsions. She passed in the evening.

I checked the other birds. They showed no signs of illness. The lady night I noticed my rooster was a little lethargic. Just didn't have the same spunk. Today, he can barely walk. He still eats and drinks but sort of falls over on his side. He seems alert for a few seconds but then looks like he's falling asleep.

Please help however you can. I do not want to lose an entire flock. Is there something I can give all my chickens? What could this be?

TIA

To add: just checked his droppings and theyre extremely watery. No blood.

What do you feed them? How do their poops look? Could they have gotten into something poisonous or eaten moldy food? Have you ever had a chicken with Mareks disease, lameness, or had an unexplained death? Has there been any coccidiosis? Heat and dehydration can be dangerous in hot summer months? Do they have multiple waterers around their ranging area and in their coop and run? If you lose another one, you should contact your state poultry vet for a necropsy, and keep the body cold, but not frozen. Cornell U may be your poultry vet, and you can find contact info here:

Thank you! This is excellent information. I'm suspecting coccidiosis. Its been especially humid the last two weeks and the two that were/are ill did have very wet poop. They have plenty of access to food and water. The feed is kept inside and is completely dry. They eat scratch grain. I have never had any unexplained death or honestly, death from disease before.

I would get some Corid (amprollium) liquid or powder from a local feed store right away, and start treatment in their water. Treat all birds. Dosage is 2 tsp of the liquid or 1 1/2 tsp of the powder per gallon of water for 5-7 days. Make sure they are drinking the water. If any are very sick you can additionally give 0.1 ml per pound of the undiluted liquid Corid twice a day to give a boost.

Thank you so much. I will do this immediately. Hopefully I can get my guy to make it through today. I picked him up today, and then I picked another bird up and he has lost a significant amount of weight in comparison. I will treat the entire flock. By chance do you know if this is something I need to worry about for ducks as well? Because if so, can I treat the ducks in the same way?
