Sprouting wild bird seed?

I have sprouted wheat and my girls love it as well. I have also sprouted mung beans but they are pretty expensive.

What do you feed for greens this time of year without breaking the bank ?
I grow a garden with lots of greens in the summer but now it is very icy here. Do you grow greens indoors somehow ?

I am just finishing up mine for this afternoon. I just buy the huge bag of cheap wild bird seed. On sale of course. They seem to like it, and they don't have the option of not eating the red seeds

I've never try sprouting anything, but I do give my birds a little wild bird seed, rolled oats, unhulled sunflower seeds and scratch as treats. They do get kitchen scraps as well as stuff from my gardens.

They have chloraphyl when you set them in the sun, window or whatever. Look at the sprouts for sale in the veggie section at the grocery store. They have green leaves.

Black oil sunflower sprouts very easily and the hens love it. Wheat is also very easy, inexpensive, and super nutritious. Winter is a tough time for feeding, especailly when there is snow 3 ft. deep everywhere. Lake Erie needs to freeze over - NOW!

Here is another question, I live in NC average winter temps are 40-50's but we do see lows in the teens on occasion. How cold tolerant is it to sprout fodder? (wondering if this is something I can do in my garage, or will I need to bring it in the house.

Sunflower seeds will germinate at 39° minimum. However, a temperature of at least 46° is required for uniformity of any kind. Put a tin pan filled with water under your sprouter station and add a submersible aquarium heater to it. Cover your sprouting station with a clear garbage bag ( you can find these at Walmart )
You'll not only get the bennies of the humidity you'll be able to sprout through the winter in an unheated garage.
