Spur covers?

I have a rooster with some impressive spurs. I do not want to remove them as I plan to show him. Has anyone heard of soft plastic covers for the spurs, like SoftClaws for cats? Another chicken hobbyist mentioned these to me but I have been unable to find them.

I would try some of the clear aquaruim air tubing. It comes in different diameters. I guess I thought of that because my gaff hook has that on the point when it is in storage.

You can trim the roosters spurs and it will not hurt judging in shows.. As far as i know, someone correct me if im wrong.. Just as far as i've seen the standards to go into just said must have "Insert amount" of spurs.

hmmm don't like the idea of roosters fighting with or without gloves...

but had the same thought...some kinda plug or cover for the spurs...but less obtrusive. I dont wanna wrap his legs up with stuff. Could you super glue, like fake finger nail glue a rubber stopper or such on the spur?

The kind of spur covers actually made for chickens are hard to find--I think it is illegal to ship them to most states, because it is assumed that they will be used for fighting birds.

Which is a shame, because there are plenty of people who would just like to cover up their rooster's spurs for back yard chicken purposes! For example, I have a lovely Cuckoo Marans roo that can be a bit protective of his ladies--because of this he lost his free-ranging priveleges. If I could cover his spurs, however, I would let him free range again.

I have heard that some people use those little wire cap thingies from the hardware store ("wire cap thingies"...is that the technical term?

). You super-glue them on, and eventually they fall off.

In my experience, which isnt in the USA, fighting birds never have spurs anyway. The spurs are removed in youth at the time of dubbing, so that knives can be tied on. fighting birds can spar without fear of injury because of this.

So its a shame that these spur covers would be associated with fighting, when there are probably more legitimate uses for them than not.
