Sundown.... NPIP is something I am struggling with.. I know I need to do it, but I have purchased some of my most beatiful birds from breeders that were not NPIP. It just feels like a title that hinders you just as much as it helps..

I was thinking about if on an off for about 2 years. Finally I decided to do it. Mainly because I wanted to show and the test they do at the fair only lasts for 3 months, this lasts a whole year.

I dont imagine I will ever be NPIP. I am sure at some point they will try to force it on us. Already it is illegal to even hatch your own chicks in IL if you aren't NPIP. But, I will not willingly ever go NPIP.

True.. They test my birds at the door of every show I go to. I'm sure my birds would appreciate a once per year "poke"... But they get spoiled every other day of the year, so maybe they can forgive me...

New Mexico must be the biggest slacker state in the union about NPIP. I had to get the state vet to certify me to test my own birds. Now I need to purchase all the supplies and get after it.

I'm NPIP, but in Indiana it is a joke. Your birds do not have to be tested to go to an open show, but do for 4-H. I pay $80 a year to be NPIP, and have to call or email them to even get them to send my papers saying I've been tested.

The man in charge of it said ideally you should only buy from NPIP people, but he didn't care if I got some that weren't, Plus the test is only good for your birds for that one day. Take them to a show, fair, or buy some and you can be bringing something in, that is why I quarantine.

I have my garage set up now, which is why I've gotten some other breeds, I'm setting up some small breeding pens in there. I'm getting Light an Buff Bantam Brahmas, a breed I've wanted for awhile, but never had room for.

Here in good ole WV NPIP is frustrating. I am 6 miles from MD, VA, and the PA borders so just think of the shows I could attend. The only problem is that I am to be NPIP and AI clean to participate in these shows. I have no problem with that. I have even volunteered to be a tester. I'm told that I cannot test my own birds. OK. I spoke with a friend in the next county...she would test mine and I would test hers plus we would volunteer for local fairs and such to save the state $$$. NOPE. If we show, the birds must be tested by the WV NPIP Police and they only want to come to your house twice a year. Very Frustrating. Then on top of that, to travel accross state lines with the birds, one must have had this done within ten days. So, essentially, I could go to two shows on back to back weekends in the spring and fall but that is it! MAKES ME WANT TO SCREAM!
