Square footage

It's my understanding that a Cornish Cross needs a minimum of one of the half square feet per bird 2 feet preferably. I like to have my birds be able to go outside and walk around a little bit does outside pen translate into the square footage equation?

as long as they are getting the minimum I think it is fine both outside and in, but yes, I think it does translate

Thanks, but Its more sq out then in but I will try and if it gets to cramped I will have some smaller chickens in the freezer!
