My girls free range and I also have a horse who is extremely sweet, but by accident yesterday she caught one of the girls (Wonky) toes under her hoof as she turned to follow me - now the toe is a bit flattened, Wonky is in the cat cage with food and water and is standing on it and talking like normal and eating but I want to go to the vet - won't they give me anti-biotics even if they let the toe heal?

...so I rang both vets who look after chickens and neither were there - the first one, the receptionist said I need to take Wonky in for an x-ray which seemed a bit dramatic; I asked if the vet could tell before an x-ray but she said no... the vet isn't in until Wednesday.

I called the other vet who looked after Onslow, but he is away, they were really nice and said to keep her quiet and calm and that if she was eating, drinking and could stand on her foot to keep an eye on her and bring her in if she was going downwhill, they said they could possibly put a splint on her but most chickens dont like that.

So, since today, she ate like a trooper and did stand on her foot I thought I would keep her in the cat cage tomorrow as well and then the day after let her walk about in the chicken house a bit. I have cleaned her foot with diluted betadine and she is on a pillowcase so that its soft for her

Am I doing the right things? Does anyone else think leaving her at the vet for the day for an x-ray is a bit stressful?
