Hey all, first time poster long time follower. I have a novogen girl with a broken toe (bad luck with a door). This happened probably 1.5 weeks ago and she seemed just fine. Yesterday I noticed her limping, and from above could see her toe was clearly crooked and swollen. Upon further inspection, I noticed this large scab right where I assume the break is. I immediately started treating it like bumblefoot, but have luckily never experienced it with any of our girls, so just wanted to know if that’s what I should continue doing?? I’ve done epsom soaks the last two days, cleaned the wound with anti microbial, started removing the scab (still very hard), non medicated antibiotic cream and gauze + wrap. I just don’t want to keep digging at it if it seems like a wound related to the acute injury of a broken toe. It seems so painful, and just want to do what’s best! She is otherwise 100% her normal cute self. Thanks so much! The top photo was yesterday prior to me cleaning, the bottom is from today after her soak.

Welcome to BYC, and I'm sorry it's under these conditions. Since bumblefoot is technically an infection, I agree with treating this the same way. That does look painful. I can understand not wanting to pick at it when it's so raw.

Bumping this post up so some bumblefoot experts will hopefully see it.

I'm guessing you don't have a vet option? Considering it's right at the break, the vet might be able to numb the area before digging out any infection. In the meantime, I'd keep doing what you're doing in an attempt to at least kill off some of the infection and dry it out.

Thank you so much, unfortunately we aren’t near a chicken vet, darn it. I’ve read about aspirin for pain, but am not quite sure how that would work!

Have you tried to squeeze out any pus? I would pack the wound with a bit of sugar and add a drop or two of 10% Betadine or Walmart’s cheaper version—Equate First Aid Antiseptic to it. This is known as sugardine dressings, and has been used in chickens, and earlier for horses with hood infections. Then dress it with a bandage or gauze and wrap it, but not too tight. Don’t use a bandaid which can come of and be swallowed. I have never dressed a toe before, so it may be tricky. Some use hydrogel dressings, and you can find those in drugs stores and online. Change the dressing daily. Here is some reading in a few posts by @coach723 concerning sugardine:
