I'm just curious. We raised our birds from little babies and so they are quite used to being handled and such. Whenever we go to pick them up we hold our hands out, and they have learned that we are coming to pick them up. When they see that they stop and squat down with their wings held up and out to the side and they just freeze. Then after we pick them up and put them down they kind of sit there for a few seconds before walking away. All our birds do this except the bantum. Is this normal? What's it all about?

My girl started doing this just before she started laying.

Yep, that's the egg squat. How old are they? Are they hens? If the roosters are doing it, you must have one firm chicken hand to reign supreme over the flock like that!

OH!!!! Yes! They are all hens! Now I understand! How funny (blushing)!

They are a funny group of hens. When we first got them I'd say "come on peepers" in a certain tone and now when I use the same tone/words they come a runnin. My husband says for a new chicken owner you sure are like the chicken whisperer! LOL! I just love having them! Lots of fun!

Mine started laying at 6-7 months old. You are about to start getting eggs. Are your nest boxes ready? And congrats, by the way. Let us know how those eggs are!

I have a Buff Orpington hen, Sunshine, and she does this when I pick her up? I also have a Silkie/Sultan bantam hen that will do this? I'm am guessing the same thing as RM44!!
