Squirrels as Predators?

I hope I have caught you in time - chicken wire will NOT keep any predator out of your chicken area. It will also allow racoons to reach thru and pull your chickens thru the wire.

Chicken wire is made to contain chickens.

To keep predators out - you will need to use hardware clothe - I personally like the 1/4" stuff.

i've had problems in the past with squirrels getting into my pens to eat the chicken food. Once they know there is a free food source, they will return constantly. i never saw them hurt my bantams, but it would scare them. Plus, they are carriers of disease, mites, lice, fleas. You don't want that in your pens. i trapped them and relocated them to a park several miles away. Turned out there were only two who were the culprits and i haven't had a problem since.

Also, i agree with HorseFeatherz NV, get yourself some hardware cloth. Chicken wire is just too flimsy for anything other than craft projects.

I have found two ways that work really well.....................I can stand by the feeder and the squirrels stay away or I make a dog sit next to the feeder. Course with the dog sitting there, the dog just might eat the food too.

Sorry, not much help but they are the only ways I have found to work.
