Hi there!

I am moving to St Louis next week from South Florida. Most likely moving to South City somewhere, although I'll be staying with family in Chesterfield for a few weeks until I find a place. I recently decided that I would like to raise 2 or 3 chickens. I don't eat eggs currently because I don't believe in supporting factory farming.

I'm a renter and have posted looking for a place that will allow me to have chickens. Seems like most landlords don't have a problem with it, which is surprising to me.

I was hoping to make some chicken loving St Louis friends and was hoping to maybe come meet someone's flock, see what kind of care is involved, lend a hand in feeding/etc, learn how to properly handle them, etc (I've done a ton of research, but I'd like to have a hands on experience before diving in). I saw some old posts about starting a STL meet up group. Is that going on?

Also, I've been doing alot of research on breeds and I think that I'd like to get a couple of white bearded silkies, as I don't need an egg laid every day and I'd like birds with some pet quality as well. I'm still up in the air on this, but does anyone know where I can find day olds in the area without a minimum quanitity order. Or would anyone want to do an order with me? This would be in a month or two...

Anyways, looking forward to the big STL move and hopefully I'll be talking or meeting with some nice people very soon.

Sincerely,

Kate

Hi! I live near STL in High Ridge Mo. I am new at chickens too I have only had mine about nine weeks going on ten. I only have casual aquaintence with a couple of chicken owners from where I work they were selling eggs. Earlier this year I went to a BBQ at a friends and although they have a large farm I was intrieged by the small flock they had. I asked a bunch of questions and was satisfied this was something I could handle. So my husband went right to work on the coop, new deck and chicken run. Its almost completely done and I have no complaints about my 4 chickens and 1 rooster by accident. I only live on about an acre of land in Jefferson co. No real close neigbors. I dont know if stl has any chicken ordinaces or not, but this would be a good format to find out. I am sure someone out there knows. I didnt ccheck in this area but I am sure its fine. Let me know if you have questions and maybe I could help.

Thanks so much for the warm welcome everyone!!!!

I'm so excited and can't wait to get started!!!!

Kate,

Welcome to St. Louis. Not sure why you'd leave Florida for here, but Welcome. I've had my girls for four months now and they are great. I have three different breeds, all good breeds for laying through the winter. I probably not much help to you, but have you contacted kycklingar! ? she has a small tractor style chicken coop, and I think she's just over in Maplewood. I think she's had her girls for a while. She's probably be a lot of help to you.
Good luck,
Maddie

Welcome, Kate.

I'm in Olivette. I just started too. I'd be happy to show you my coop, run and chickens. And my very simple brooder.

Also, I know you are interested in Silkies, but if you also have an interest in Salmon Favorelles, Light Brahmas or Black Australorps, I am expecting a shipment of one-day old chicks (pullets) towards the end of this month or the first of July. I know I'm going to have too many and was planning on selling them on Craig's List after they're a bit bigger, but if you want any chicks, let me know. If not, no problem - I'm not pushing them
