Like hinkjc said SS Sussex do have mahogany colored breast feathers. In the case of the SS roo you posted and most SS since most are hatchery quality, Their black cheverons are too large and form closly together and end up covering the underlying red.

I just went out and got you some pics of mine.

Here is an older pic of one of my roos, It's a side view but you can see some red in the lower areas

Here is another pic, from this angle, you can see up through the large black cheverons and see the underlying red a bit better.

And in this pic, I've pulled back the breast feathers so you can easily see the red, and in some of those feathers that in the first row of the ones not pulled down, you can see how large the cheverons are and how when they are all flatted out together, they will form a covering to hide the red that is under them.
