Hello all

i have recently got 4 chickens and have built a new run / coop for them. i have dug a hole around the run. Placed bricks and hardcore into it and burried the base of the run into it. To stop foxes (only main predator in the area) from gaining access.

it had netting over the top to stop anything coming in that way. The run incorporates 1 tree but has 2 others just outside of it as that is the only place in the garden it will fit with other work and renovation projects that are ongoing.

My current issue with the constant downpours we are having in the UK is temporary flooding in areas. The run is all mud. Which is fine when its dry or a little damp. But when it rains heavy and floods its very boggy and pools of standing water in places.

Any suggestions on how to counter this would be great?
I have attached pictures for reference.

Is the spot low lying? How is the natural drainage in that spot (before you added chickens)?

If there was an existing drainage issue then adding drains or trenching to divert water may be necessary. If the soil there naturally drains well, but is muddy due to the chickens on it and because of heavy rain, then you might want to consider using deep litter with plenty of chunky wood chips to help control the mud and let water drain through.
