Starlight Green Egger egg color.

Anyone contacting the hatcheries about the egg color vs their % of odds and them not coming anywhere close....and getting nowhere with the hatchery.....could leave a review on their website...

I got 3 at around 6 weeks of age... glad I only got 3 lol hope to get at least one green egg layer.

I know for me it’s fun to just see the mixes and their different personalities. I got SGEs hoping for more green eggs with the Easter egger personality and that’s exactly what I got actually my 2 are some of the sweetest I have ever owned. And really good layers!!

I am glad you got exactly what you wanted.

But sadly, there seems to be an increasing amount of people that did not and I do understand their frustration.

Just wanted to share on this thread that my SGE is so different looking from all of these, and lays light olive eggs. I got two from TSC, one unfortunately got taken by an owl before she ever laid an egg, but the survivor is a very prolific green egg layer. (Eggs are on the left and the SGE (Whitney) is the buff one in the picture

I ordered 10 SGEs in March directly from Hoovers Hatchery. Only 8 made it to now. They are about 20 weeks old and five have been laying since July 7th.
I was under the assumption it was only a 5% chance to lay brown eggs. Well only 1 of the five is laying green lol. I even have a almost cream colored egg.
1 egg is not pictured it’s a peachy brown.
Even if the remaining 3 chickens that have not laid yet have green eggs that’s 50%.
Has this happened to anyone else with this breed?
I do enjoy the rainbow colors but would like a few more green eggs to go with my ham

Like you, I am very disappointed!!!!! You pay more for the chicken because of the color of eggs they lay. And yup all mine are brown!!!! I think only 5% are green!!!

Lost one of my SGEs this morning no signs of anything wrong just found her this morning. Was curious if anyone has lost an SGE and if so what age. She was only a year and a half. And my only SGE actually laying green eggs.

I always the the mixes knowing it’s probably 50/50 despite the description. Hatcheries can’t predict their color rate as well as they want us to think. That’s why anytime you see an Ameraucana at a feed store… you’re getting an EE 99% of the time unless they’re solid in color and from somewhere like meyers

Hmmm... Looks like someone at the hatchery put the wrong roo in w/ the hens whose eggs were to be hatched as SGE's.

A rooster w/ only 1 blue gene would mean 50% of hatched chicks carry no blue genes. IF it's not the rooster, then someone went WAY wrong on the hens. Personally it'd be easier to use a rooster w/ 2 blue genes... Then some hens MAY inherent 2 blue egg genes IF their hens are supposed to be OEs to begin with.

Unless it's gone up, the cost of testing for a blue egg gene is less than the cost of a bag of quality feed (Dumor may cost less).

As to the death of a hen that is only 1.5 yrs old. She is a hybrid. Hybrids are bred to lay large #s of eggs in the 1st 2 years of life. Some develop egg related issues early. Some live way past their life expectancy - during which they might continue to lay spradically. Most are in that very 1st category.

I do know that there are now breeders that produce their own hybrid egg layers. The one that is about 45 miles from me started with high quality, dual purpose birds. His BSL (black sex link) chicks are almost 2x the size of hatchery BSL's right out of the egg. I need to get in touch with him now. Very curious how his BSL girls do laying & how long they lay. Wonder what his average is?

Crossing his BSL girls to a blue double gene egg layer rooster would yield sage egg layers. Edit 1 - i have had Ameraucana & CLB that are double blue egg genes. I have also had CLBs that laid white eggs or so light a blue as to appear white. I didnt have them testedvto verify 2 blue egg genes. The resulting chicks should lay a sage or mint green egg UNLESS the hen is laying darker brown eggs. Then, they'd be more olive in color..

And now I want some of his purebred RIR as well as a flock of his BSL girls!!

Edit 2 - normally to produce a sage egg layer, you would need a chicken that has a brown & a blue egg gene. This hybrid cross, to get a sage green egg in the next generation, needs to have a light brown or tan egg gene, not a darker brown. This first gen would be an OE, but her eggs should be a lighter olive.

Take that resulting hen & cross her with the 2 blue egg gene roo. You should get 50% sage or mint green eggs & 50% blue egg layers - to include cockerel chicks. Besides Ameraucana & CLB, there is the WTB that Dr Whiting produced/developed that could be used or even an EE roo known to carry 2 blue egg genes.

I am curious what breeding the hatcheries do that all the girls look almost the same!

I am so sorry you guys got gyped out of your SGE's. Seems like a lot of people are getting brown egg laying Easter Eggers, too, lately. I do not understand that. A blue egg layer, to any other colored egg layer should not produce a brown egg layer...
