Start laying eggs?

So our chicks won't start laying till beginning of October, then only for a little while as I plan on shutting them down for the winter. Figure it'll be too hard for them in -30 degree weather.
-30 were do you live and how can you shutting them down so they don't lay

The way I understand it in the learning centre on this website, if I let " nature take its course" my birds should quit laying during the winter. I have a small insulated coop with 2 windows and 10 chickens. They will get the morning and late afternoon sun. The only heat we will have will be for the water. Since it does get to -40 below at times, I think my girls will quit laying! I only plan on adding a red light bulb if need be.

They will lay through their first winter, you don't need to do anything, during their second winter they will quit laying during the molt which starts in the fall, some people use light to get them to resume laying earlier, I'm not really sure it actually helps any, they will resume laying as the days lengthen again, you don't need to heat them, they will do fine.

How old will the chicks be when they start to lay eggs?

Egg Arrival.

Got my first egg at 25 weeks and two days, no additional light added. Hang in there, it will happen before you know it!
