start laying???

I have 14 chickens who are 1st of May they will be 12wks. they are muts........... bantams some how long does it take before they start laying???? and should I look for the rooster to start his thing before they start laying????

Mine usually start laying at about 5-6 months old. And the rooster starts "roostering" about the same time, the best I can remember.
