Started my coop build today

Seeing as it's raining here today probably won't get much completed. Thinking I will cut the roof trusses. Trying to decide if I want to go with a peaked roof or lien to style. Any suggestions. I go either way.

you had asked me over in my coop thread if I'd done 16" or 24" centers. I did 24" on mine, but my coop is only 6' wide. If you're going to do 2x4's, and span 8ft between the walls, I'd recommend either do them on 16" or put an additional piece of 2x4 across(like a ceiling joist) for added bracing. Doesn't have to be all the way down to the top of the walls, but it would help with support.

an example here, this is an 8x12 storage building we built last fall, didn't have any trouble with the weight of the 7" of snow we got back in Jan

just a recommendation. Of course if you want easier, a lean to type roof is definitely easier

okay thanks that helps a lot

Well came home today and just as I pulled into my driveway it started to pour. So I came in the garage and was looking at my materials for the coop. Was going to start cutting my trusses and it's a good thing I looked at the tin for the roof first. I had originally planned for a peaked roof so I bought my 2x4's long enough for 1' of over hang and had Menards order my tin in 5' lengths. Well they cut it at 7' so not having any way to cut it made my decision to go with a lean to roof. So I'm building the extra height I now need on the one side. Good thing is I have next 3 days off to get as much done as I can. I plan on having coop done by monday. I have time to work on run as my chicks won't be here until the 20th.

7' isn't going to be long enough to span it in one piece, this means you're going to have to overlap it, which means you paid for way more than you need. I'd take it back and make them cut it, or trade it for 10' pieces so you have a foot overhand front and back like you wanted

Right I had figured I would have to do that. I had planned on each side being 5' with over hang. So I ordered my pieces at 60" but they cut them at 84.

Ok did manage to get some work done after the rain and before it got dark. Was able to get the trusses up but that's it. Tomorrow I am hitting it hard all day should make good progress
