I have 2 five week old B Australorp chicks that I hatched, and I also have 6 pullets who are about 5 months - just about to start laying. I know it's time to move the chicks off their starter and on to a grower feed, but since I only two chicks I still have most of the 50# bag of chick starter leftover.

I feel bad wasting the rest of the chick starter. Is it OK to keep feeding my chicks the starter until it's all gone? I have layer feed for the pullets - what if I mixed it with the starter for the chicks, at least that way I'd have a mid level protein feed....

Any advise would be awesome! Thanks!

you can mix the chick starter with your grower feed or layer pellets with no problem. i frequently do this to keep from wasting feed. this will also help them adjust to the new feed.

I know of people that feed their chickens non medicated chick starter all there life, but you will have to give them oyster shell free choice since the starter don't have calcium in it. I never used grower feed for mine. I feed them non med starter till they started laying. Like I said, make sure that the laying hens have a good source of calcium.
