I went to my local shop this weekend to get a new bag of feed, explained that I had baby chicks and the whole nine yards. They rang me up and put the bag of feed by my car. It's Nutrena stater/grower. When I saw what they'd done I was a little upset, but they raise chickens so I am assuming that they knew what they were giving me. I checked Nutrena's site, and it's not recommended until the chicks are 7 weeks. Mine are two weeks. Is this going to do damage?

Thanks

I'm currently feeding Southern State's Start-n-Grow, which is suggested from day 1 until point of lay. My chicks are 2 weeks too, and they love it. So did the batch from last November, and they're all doing fine.

Now assuming your starter/grower is similar you will be just fine!

I get nutrena medicated starter as that is the only medicated they carry other than southern states.
So far I have moved 2 batches outside that I got as baby chicks and all have done fine. I am down to 3 inside just because they are so tiny I don't want them outside with the bigger chicks yet.

Eh - I just checked their website again, and they have the same bag pictured for chick starter and chick grower. Looks like I got worried up for nothing. The label said it was medicated so that wasn't a concern. The shop keeper mentioned that the company had gone through a few changes, so I guess this was one. I was just worried about the nutrient and protien content being sufficent.

ETA I didn't see the bag until after I'd paid for it. I thought they'd bring it to the register but they brought it right to my car. They'd already made me feel like an idiot about asking for grit (I don't think they meant to, I know it's not required at this point but I'd rather have it around than have to look later), so I was trying to avoid interacting with them again. It was kind of uncomfortable all around. That was part of the reason I posted this.

This has been far too much thinking about chicken food for my taste. Next bag I'll just buy from where we picked up the chicks. Thanks for your help.

Thats what our feed store carries, the Nutrena starter/grower, and mine are fine. I had my babies on it last year and feed it up until point of lay.

Don't you just hate that? We have two feed stores that are close enough to do business with regularly. One of them carries more items, but I won't shop there unless I have too because they all but roll their eyes if I have a question and check out is almost like an assembly line. The other one is a bit smaller, but they get most of my business, because they'll answer questions, are honest about it if they don't know, and are just generally a bunch of really nice people. Glad your bag of feed is going to work for you and you don't have to go thru the hassle of trying to return it.

Yes, it was frustrating. Annoying because they're so close, but they aren't the friendliest bunch.
