What the heck is mash??? I went to our local feed store (the place where we are getting the birds from) and asked for some feed. According to the owner, they only use and sell mash. So I bought what they had, but I have no clue what mash is. Someone please help.

PS... don't have the chicks yet.

Thanks for the reply. For some reason, mash sounds like it involves water. I was a little worried there. Life is good again

Mash is the "pre" form of a pellet or crumple feed. Mash is usually what the local feed mill makes on the site.
Mash is a good feed for chicks and is best fed wet..

Ga.chickenman :

ground corn like like meal or grits.. lol (not crumbles)

It is more than just corn..
It is a complete feed just like any other chick starter...

Just coarsely ground feed. Coarser usually than corn meal, but finer than cracked grains. Depends on what the mill is using for components.

If it's good palatable feed I actually prefer mash to pellets or crumbles once I have the feeders adjusted right for it. If there are unpalatable components they'll pick through it to avoid those so you'd be better off with pellets or crumbles.
