Ok, this is driving me crazy - There is more to read on here about feed than anyone can imagine and I am now contemplating giving all my birds over 4 weeks old gamebird pellets. I have read all the protein ratios on all feeds, Starter is between 18% - 21 % (depending on what the feed store has) - Gamebird pellets - 20% - Layer crumbles - 16%.
In the winter, I was mixing flockraiser with layer crumbles for added protein and got more eggs.

So, now I ask for opinions, can I give the newborn chicks starter for 4-6 weeks til they feather and go out with the adults, and also give the adults gambird pellets? This way, no stressing over who gets when in which pen, and also, they seem to be doing well on it. Will it hurt the laying hens with all that protein?

Thanks

No it will not hurt them and actually it will keep them from feather picking (or should) if they don't have enough protein. I am feeding all of my bigger birds this right now, only have my little babies on the starter feed. Just be sure to give your layers some oyster shell for the calcium.

Just ran across this thread.
and my question was answered.
I wanted to up the protein so its Game bird pellet.
for my layers .

thanks a bunch.

It has been my experience that my chicks do better on higher protein than what is typically recommended for the "growth" phase. BUT, there is something to be said for slowing down their growth during that period. You will have to experiment and research for yourself. I would be okay with chicks up to about 8 weeks on the 20% game bird feed if you felt they needed the higher protein, such as during hot weather when they don't eat as much, but I would probably drop it back to an 18% starter after that and then leave them on that permanently, adding free-choice oyster shell once they start laying.
