Since last year I've wanted to start a feral flock of chickens separate to my flock at the house as some of you know, one so i could see how they do in a harsher environment and two in hopes that I would get a tough survival bird out of it fully adapted to that environment. I tried it late summer - fall on a whim and they stayed a few days on free range then one day followed me back up the hill to the main flock. My mistake was not getting a deer feeder or something to that extent and 1 gallon water for them so I wouldn't have to check on them so much I think I was checking three four maybe five times a day and then the inevitable they follow me back, so i think I'm going to try it again but with what I said that way I don't have to check on them often and when I do do it after dark that way they are sure to not follow me back, and after a while I figure they wont be used to me feeding them then they wouldn't follow me back. also that time I put a rooster and 4 hens next time I would like to add a rooster and say twelve hens that way that way the losses don't mean so much. 2024 didn't end well production wise my whole flock is down to 10 so I am going to try to produce as many chicks as possible and hope that I have enough come next spring. so that's what I'm thinking I wont be able to do this till spring because of the reasons listed above but until then I can get their area ready for them by planting some native stuff for food and nesting areas. I'm going to document getting ready throughout the summer, possible candidates to take down there and then by next spring hopefully document their success.
