Hey Jon in wa just wondered if you knew about the Washingtonians thread? It's under index-where are you, where am I-Washingtonians. Very chatty, friendly chicken people. All are welcome.

Even though I said I wasn't going to touch my eggs again until day 18, I couldn't resist. I candled last night (day 12) and took out the clear eggs. 9 out of 12 shipped BLRW eggs are definitely developing well. 1 more of them looks weird to me, but I wasn't sure so it stayed in.

None of the 8 B/B/S wyandotte eggs that were shipped with them developed, but the seller from here on BYC has been great and is going to send me some more in a couple months for just the cost of shipping since the BLRW eggs shipped and incubated along side them are doing so well. It seems that they just weren't fertile.

And finally 5 out of the 6 from my flock are developing.

So I have 15 eggs left in the incubator... one of which is a maybe. So I have my fingers crossed for 14 happy healthy chicks. Lockdown in 5 days!

So pumped for you and your 14/15 healthy chicks!

I hope everyone makes it! Good luck!

I will be watching! How are the other chicks and pigglets?

They're great... although the piglets are trouble makers. They had us chasing them for almost 2 hours the other night after they escaped from their fence. And all the sudden they weren't hungry anymore and wouldn't follow the bucket...

The chicks are huge at almost 2.5 weeks old. They're feathering out well which is a good thing since they're going to loose their eco-glow to the new chicks in a week's time. I think I'm going to keep the new chicks in their own brooder for a week or so until they get their feet under them before trying to combine them.

Does anyone here have experience with combining chicks in a brooder that are 3.5 weeks apart in age? I've read in other threads that you shouldn't put brand new chicks in with older chicks, but that by a week old they should be able to hold their own, or at least run away from the big bullies. I plan on doing another hatch right after this one and am trying to avoid having a separate brooder for each and every hatch.

thought you might like to see my first candling video - now I only wish it were the nine remaining chickens in the incubator...but it's not

It's an 8 day old white dove egg that I have incubating along with my chicken eggs....wish my chicken eggs candled this easily....all i see is a blob so i'm envious of those that can see a foot!!! The view looks a bit blurry but in person, the view is amazing to see this little embryo dancing around in its egg...

that is awesome...I saw an embryo move the other day for first time...it was amazing. But it was a dark eggs, so it was more blobish than that! So either you have small hands, or doves lay some pretty big eggs, its bigger than the bantam eggs I'm setting! LOL

wow - i've never seen a bantam egg, so i think that's just the camera making my dove egg appear big plus I cupped my thumb and pointer finger where the egg was resting into a small hole in order to keep as much light on the egg....because the dove egg is actually pretty small...the blobbish mess is exactly what i'm seeing with my chicken eggs...they are all brown eggs so i can barely make anything out except for the movement...

Well we are almost to lock down. I will lock my incubator down Sunday night. I will fill both trays with warm water then sit on my hands for the next few days. I cant wait for this hatch to be over. I am going to set a batch of silkie eggs next. I have had them separated from the Cochin's and frizzles for a couple weeks now so i should hatch pure silkies. I will start collecting eggs now so i have a good batch to go into the incubator as soon as the marans hatch. I have all the silkie hens broke from being broody so once the all start laying i should really have some eggs coming in. who else is planing your next batch and what are you going to be hatching.

I go into lockdown on Monday morning before I head to work. It will be so hard to be away while they're hatching... but I suppose it will keep me from interfering. In another week or so I'm planning to set a dozen B/B/S wyandotte eggs and a dozen assorted eggs (for a friend at work to start her flock). So I'll be jumping right back into it yet again! I can't wait for these chicks to arrive!

Lockdown for me is on Wednesday and I'm sooooo excited!!!!!!!!! I'm on pins and needles with this thread to see everyone's chicks hatching!!
