I live in richmond hill Georgia and I have decided on starting my own flock I was thinking about six hens does anyone know first of all if this is legal inside city limits? Also I was wondering I have two small children and want to have some good layers any ideas on breeds? Please excuse me first time posting I know this is probably covered in other forums. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

You'll have to check city ordinances (or county, if you're not in the city limits.) I checked our section on local laws for you and didn't find anything. I'm in the country but do know people keep chickens in some of the towns nearby.

If you plan on buying chicks from a local feed store, most any of the usual large fowl breeds will lay well, such as Barred Rock, production red, Orpington, and Australoprp. They'll probably also have what they might call Ameraucana or Auracana, which are almost a mix known here as Easter Eggers; among these, you may get some that lay blue eggs. These lay fairly well, though not as well as Australorps. They may also have some bantam breeds; I'm not that familiar with them, except if they have Silkies, you may not get a lot of eggs because they tend to go broody a lot. Bantams do lay smaller eggs, too. Australorp hold the world's record for largest number of eggs in a year. All these tend to be fairly docile, friendly birds, except production red probably vary a lot. They're not really a breed but a hybrid. I'd avoid Rhode Island Red from a feed store for this reason as well.

If you can find a good breeder in your area, these are completely different, and I'd go by what the breeder says. You will pay more and may not get as many eggs, but you will have fabulous birds.

Thanks so much very helpful there is so much information to go through I never would have thought this much.
