Starting out with Peafowl

The age of the peafowl you should get depends on your patience and time. It will most likely be 2 years before you see any hatches if you start with chicks. You can also find peafowl of all ages at local auctions and on Craigslist.

I was just wondering if it is best to get juveniles because I hear chicks have a high mortality rate.

The most dangerous times for peachicks are the first two weeks and then after they have been on the ground for a week or two. Cocci kills more chicks than anything else, after the first winter they don't usually get bad cocci again unless stressed and in poor conditions.

I have to agree chicks are alot riskier. I did bite the bullet and bought 3 white chicks from a local woman a week and half ago simply because I really wanted white birds to add to my India blues and B.S. adults. Its going to be a long and stressful road. My India blue hen laid and hatched out 2 (1 male 1 female) in May and so far good. Knock on wood! Raising peachicks is more stressful than raising my own babies!
