I'd wager there's still a ton of salvage construction materials to be found in your area. Free with owner's consent. Wouldn't surprise me if one day you drove past somebody's coop...and recognized several pieces from your old home and your old coop!

The roof, for one, appears remarkably intact.

We used some pallets, pieces of leftover plywood, and asked family/friends for any left over materials they had to make this coop:

It cost around $100 in the end mostly because of the metal roof. We promised eggs to those who donated materials If you read the blog post you can see in pictures how we built it.

I don't think I will build my new one on skids. The only reason the other one was on skids is because it was an ice shanty. And the skids came in handy when we had to move it into the yard, and then we just left them on.

I drove by where the coop sits today. It is down in a revine off the road, but you can still see it from the road. The owners of the property were burning it. Broke my heart to see that, but I know the owners had no other choice I guess. I don't know what is worse, driving by to see it sitting there, or knowing it is gone entirely.

As far as looking for salvagable stuff.... I have seen people out taking stuff (looting)... And people's emotions are still running high, so asking for things would just make me uncomfortable. Just a tough situation I guess.

I am hoping to just build a 12x12 shed and go from there. I still haven't really been able to find plans, and I am worried about getting so far into it, and then running out of money. Has anyone built a 12x12-ish building and insulated it? Rough cost guesses? I was able to find a few windows! So at least I have a start!

If you want a 12x12 coop get some paper and pencil and make your own plans. there's lots of pics of coops here on byc that you can copy, or just use your own imagination. Looking at the wreck of your old coop the PO didn't use full 2x4's for the walls, so you don't have to either. The roof can be pole barn steel, the walls 1/4 or 3/8 plywood with vinyl siding or whatever siding you want to use, maybe paint. it's up to you.
