I have been a lurker on here for over two years. I finally decided that I needed to register as we finally got some fowl and chickens last month after talking about it for almost two years.

Enough typing and on to the pictures. They always speak 1K words. :)

I got a wild hair to get quail chicks.
~ 1 week old

~ 2 weeks old:

I finally built this:

And the weather finally warmed up above freezing at night so they could go outside. Note to self, wait until it is warm enough for chicks to stay outside. They sure can poop, eat and drink!

The same week I got the quail chicks, (19 total. I kept 9 and a friend got 10.) I bought 5 EE or possibly Olive Eggers. They were in a free range flock of Americauna (possibly EE), BCM and game bantams. The lady was nice enough to hold them 2 weeks so I could build my run for them.

Wife says it looks really ghetto. I think its decent for what I have to work with and I spent $10 on bird netting. Everythign else I had or scavanged for over the last few months. I plan to add some pallet boards cut to look like a picket fence, painted white around the base.

On to the chicken pics:

And no that is not a crow in the pics. lol

Hoping to build a Chicken tractor after I build the coop for these 5 hens. It will be replacing the dog house, I have tin covering 3/4 of the run now and may finish off the rest if I can pick up a few extra pieces.

I am also looking to add a few different types to my flock. Working on getting a few dozen hatching eggs to hatch and raise some for myself. Looking at D'uccle Mille Fleur and Porcelain, BCM, Grey/Silver Dorking, and GL Brahma and possibly Jubilee Orpington. Not sure I will keep all of those/these as I do live in town, but hope to at least keep one of most of them.

I would appreciate any advice, etc.

I got pics to show, but had to go through HTML, has to be an easier way to post via photobucket.

We have loads of people with ghetto coops -there is nothing wrong with saving money and re-purposing materials. They even have contests on BYC for ghetto coops. Hope you took pictures along the way. Chickens really dont care if they don't have chandeliers or hot tubs.

Picked up my hatch from the eggs that I purchased last month. A coworkers neighbor hatched them out for me. They hatched on Thursday. 42 + 2 Cornish (hatched Monday) from elsewhere. Now to watch them grow.

Any tips on sexing them while they are young?
