I'm just wondering what the starting temp in a brooder needs to be. We have 8 chicks comin in May. I have a tupperware container from Walmart that wre using as the brooder, I have a heat lamp and a waterer. Still gotta find something for the feeder...I'll be using pine shavings as the bedding. The first days I'm going to put a towel over the pine shavings.

Thanks for any help

Oh the chicks will be day olds.

They say 95 is a good start temp. I gauge the temp on the actions of the chicks.
If they huddle their cold. If they try to get away from the light, it's too hot.
If their moving about, eating drinking pooping and napping, their fine.

95-ish.

I say "ish" because it seems that some folks have success with lower and some insist it must be higher.
