Starting to lay eggs

I have two golden comets who are 18 weeks old, give or take. We found our first egg 5 days ago (and ate it 3 days ago!) and other than small (expected), it was a perfect egg. Well, we've checked every morning and evening and haven't found any other eggs. I've looked in unusual places, areas around the yard they like to hang out in, and nothing. Is it normal when they start laying to go days between finding eggs? I'm figuring that it's just because they are still young and haven't fully reached their egg laying stage

Yes, it's normal that you won't find any more eggs for a while. It's going to take a while for them to get regular.

Yes.....but.....
Free range birds sometimes need to be 'trained'(or re-trained) to lay in the coop nests, especially new layers. Leaving them locked in the coop for a week or so can help 'home' them to lay in the coop nests. Fake eggs/golf balls in the nests can help 'show' them were to lay. They can be confined to coop and maybe run 24/7 for a few days to a week, provided you have adequate space and ventilation, or confine them at least until mid to late afternoon. You help them create a new habit and they will usually stick with it. ..at least for a good while, then repeat as necessary.
