And wouldn't it be more merciful to put the animal out of its mercy? And would it be smarter and nicer to not dump your spents and problem animals on others who might not know? And for the animal sake its much more merciful then being released in the wild defenseless and being possible starved? Not saying I'll do that but other people would. And also to many birds end in cannibalism, I'll rather eat my bird then watch them eat each other.

I have to agree. I do not plan on raising specifically for food.
However, some people raise their chickens for many purposes.
It isn't my place to judge others.
