sorry! I really want a Syrian hamster. My parents said they would think about it. They think that having one when we have house cats would be a bad idea, but I know lots of people with birds and hamsters who have house cats and it works out fine.

As long as you keep him/her away from the cat, it should be fine. I've never had a Syrian before. I did have two Chinese Dwarf males a few years ago. They were very sweet (one of them kept biting me the first week I had him, but he stopped after I held him a lot) . They were great and I was able to keep two males together (Dwarfs are very social and can be kept in groups, even of the same gender. NOT Syrians though!). I'm just making a recommendation. If you really like the Syrians though, get one.

That's why I wanted the Syrian. Because I don't really have the space for more than one hamster, and the dwarf hamsters might be too small for a starter hamster.

True. While you don't NEED more than one dwarf, they are much happier if they have a friend. Plus, if you're not used to a larger rodent, they can be hard to handle. I had rats before hamsters, which is why I got dwarves and not a Syrian.

I like dwarf hamsters a lot. I'm a beginner,I haven't had Nibbles for very long (yes, the date on the pic is wrong) but he is the sweetest hamster ever.
