Battery hens, are kept in tiny cages where they can't move or spread their wings, and 3 - 6 hens are in each cage. These cages are called battery cages, giving the hens the name of battery hens. These are the hens who lay the eggs you buy from the grocery store. Yes they are terribly abused. When a hen reaches the age of 2 years, they have a drop in egg production, so these hens are then considered useless to the industry, and are killed. They are usually killed in inhumane way, like someone just breaking their necks. Since the hens are given practically no space, they peck at each other, and have much feather loss. These hens sometimes have lice, since they can't dust bathe. These hens never get to see sunlight, or even feel the grass beneath their feet. They live a life of boredom and are always miserable. These places are called factory chicken farms. On the rare occasion someone (like me) will come and rescue them from these horrid places, and give them a nice life, and of course no more cages. This is a hen in a factory chicken farm, living the awful life. These hens are suffering as we speak.

These are normal White Leghorns, as you see due to the conditions of the factory farm, they have bare necks, and feather loss through out their body.

If you look up battery hens on Google Images, you can find many more pictures. And if you just search battery hens on Google, you can learn much more about the inhumane industry.

I hate when people go on saying things like "But my eggs are free range!" and "I only buy cage free eggs so it's perfectly humane!".

Here is something most people don't know:

- Non-labeled eggs are probably from battery hens (who wants to buy a box that says "battery cage raised!" ???????), aka:


- Eggs labeled caged free are just big crowded rooms of chickens, aka:

(Although, it's good to note most farms like this have chickens that are in the same physical condition as the ones in the battery cage)

- Eggs labeled free range are the same as cage free, except with a very small outside area that probably doesn't even have grass (sadly), aka:

They say that the cage free factory chicken farm hens are actually less happy than the ones in cages.. I thought that was a bit weird but.. And no, it doesn't have grass.
