Any wound that has red lines leading from it needs urgent attention. This is a sign that a potentially serious infection has taken hold. It should never be ignored or treated at home. IV pennicillin or similar may be needed. I once worked alongside a young man who had a sore finger. I saw red lines leading up his arm and advised him to go to ER. He nearly lost his arm because of the infection. Never ignore red lines leading away from a sore or cut!

Excellent point to mention. To me, that's such a common sense statement, but many don't realize that.

So i went and they hooked up this wierd gun to a bag of iv fluid and then to a suction and they shot water into it and sucked the crap out. The red line was growing by the hour. And they gave me a perscription for huge horse pills lol. They are amox- clav. I have to watch the red line to make sure

Almost the same exact thing happened to me end of summer last year. Coyotes had been picking off my chickens so I was kinda watching.. one attacks and I went sprinting after it with my rifle barefoot. I got a bad puncture wound on my toe, washed it with the hose and ignored it. Red streaking lines, the IV bag, you name it. It was god-awful. Even the slightest touch to the wound put me in severe pain. My main problem is I waited a day and a half before going to the doctor thinking the infection would take care of itself. I never go to the doctor. I won't ever make that mistake again.

It was awful. I waited pretty much a day to be seen. But when i saw the red line i went. A few months ago i got bit by a brown recluse and waited a week to go to the hospital. I thought i was just having a slight allergic reaction to the bite. But pretty soon i couldnt bend my leg. Turns out the swelling wasnt swelling at all. It was staph all throughout my leg. It nearly killed me because i waited so long. So i was a little concerned it may bring back my staph

Ouch. That sounds like it hurt. A month ago I was walking barefoot and stepped on nails I stepped on like 5 nails at once that was on the ground. My foot on the bottom turned purple in little circles like polkadots but it ended up going away in like 3 days. But it really hurt. 2 weeks ago I stepped on. 1 nail and I was lucky then to I had no infection. And the scary thing was that I have had no shots at all!

Mychickensneaky What are you waiting for - get a tetanus shot NOW - if you haven't had the boosters (I think every 10 years for life) then tell a doctor so they will give you the right shot(s)

There is a difference in a booster and a tetanus shot like NOW if you get a puncture from less than hallowed ground.

Crow Caw if you won't do it for yourself at least keep up on tetanus boosters for US. We empathize with the folks posting on here and worry about them. We don't need extra stress. I remember the doctor always stressing about the red lines from the wound. People who work around farm animals (manure) gardeners using manure, etc. etc. Soap and water doesn't wash everything alway.

As a kid I learned if you got a puncture wound to pay attention to it, if it bled well which washed the wound out - wasn't as bad as a puncture that didn't bleed at all. Believe me I'm squeamish to begin with

I try to avoid doctors but I know when I need to see one pronto.

Ive had a tetanus shot within the last 3 years. Where i am you dont get boosters. You just get a tetanus shot every 5 years. I just didnt expect staph lol.

Out here if you get a puncture wound even if you had boosters they still give a tetanus shot if it was dirty or could be contaiminated. I'm under the impression that the one shot is stronger, than a booster that could be waning.
