New to this whole deal, 4 daughters in Norvell, MI. We started this spring with an idea of a few ducks and some egg laying chickens, right up to the part where the township decided to tell us we had to have 3 acres and be in the agricultural zoning? It is disappointing because nowhere does it specify a chicken as not being a "bird" which you can own in Norvell Township per ordinance. As well "horses" require A1 zoning and 3 acres it never specifies chickens, so I am having a difficult time finding a way around this, there is certainly a loophole as a chicken is a bird, a bird is legal to own here just as a dog, my dog lives outside as a pet, so in the same a chicken which is a bird, should also be permitted to live outside as a pet?
Anyhow, looking to find how to make this work, if not we move or find a farm we can have and raise our own chickens.
I believe that as a parent we teach our children valuable life skills, these skills can help define our children indefinitely. One skill I have enjoyed greatly is self sufficiency, which includes fishing, hunting, gardening, conservation, and hopefully raising chickens next. With 4 daughters, teaching them valuable skills that ensures they have food to eat, and they have worked for and earned it in the process, will teach them to be more economical and less wasteful in their lives.
We are looking forward to being on this forum and learning about our new future if not immediate venture!
