Sticking with one breed?

Our buff orpingtons are ordered and should be arriving soon! It's our first flock so we're pretty excited here! Can we add another breed shortly after?

Yes, but it will be easiest sooner than later. Once a flock is established, it's difficult to add birds.
If they're chicks, I'd get more chicks in the next month.

This is in response to your ovation.
It depends on time of year and your ambient temperature.
If it isn't below 20F in the building, I put them out as soon as they come out of the hatcher with a heat source.
Ideally, they should be brooded just as a mother hen would. A hot spot so they can warm up and lots of cool space.
