Sticktight Fleas and Treatment

When I treated mine I just sprayed the dirt. We are not allowed to burn here, so my bedding just went to the manure pile. Luckily none got reinfested.
Ok! I might end up doing that too. Not sure if we're allowed to burn in the summer with all the grass fires lol. After treating the coop and run, do I wait a couple hours for everything to dry off and then put the chickens back?

OK guys, here's my game plan. Let me know if I need to add or change anything! Thank you.

List of supplies for the chickens mites AND steps to take.

Supplies:

  • Permethrin 10 (Liquid; NOT pre-mixed, too expensive)
  • Poultry Dust
  • Empty big mist/spray bottle
  • Small syringe
  • 2 bags wood shavings (to replace the hay)

What To Do:

Step 1: Spray parts of the yard where the chickens like to play. Under the grapefruit, JP Maple tree, and orange tree, spots in this area, open area in front of the adults coop, around the firepit / compost hill.

Step 2: Remove one chicken at a time and treat them with the diluted Permethrin (use a syringe to apply). Once treated, let them loose in the yard.

Step 3: Remove food, water, and run accessories. Put them to the side to be scrubbed and cleaned.

Step 4: Clean out run, coop and egg boxes entirely of hay and bedding. Make sure there's none left.

Step 5: Scoop ALL used bedding and droppings into a burn pile, the hot compost OR trashbags. MUST be burned / at a high temperature to kill fleas and eggs.

Step 6: Spray the entire top layer of dirt (floor; coop and run) with Permethrin.

Step 7: Spray the entire coop (including nooks and crannies) and run (even the fencing.)

While you have them caught, you could spray their bodies for any lice or mites they have, but other than that, I think your plan is solid!

Woohoo! Thank you so much for the advice. I feel a little less stressed now that I've got this figured out. Today I plan on gathering the supplies. Then waking up eaaarly in the AM tomorrow to get started. 😆

You're welcome! I like your plan so much I'd like to add it to my thread!

:lau Yeah, no burning!

No need to wait.
Ok, I know you said no need to wait for the Permethrin to dry... But what if it's in a dust bath that they have access to outside of the run? If I spray the backyard, then let the chickens out (after spraying them)... they would go straight to that spot. I know when they dig in the dirt they eat it, too. Is that dilution safe for them to ingest?! 😳

I thought I updated this thread... Anyway, me and my roommate did 2 rounds of Permethrin, used wood ash, got rid of the hay, dust bathed the chickens and put Vaseline on exposed skin / where the fleas were... Fleas seem to be gone for now. I know we'll need to do this regularly though, because we have possums that pass through the yard at night / hang out in the tree above the chickens coops and runs. It took maybe a week or so for me to spot a flea on Cricket again.
