I have always wonder why do chickens sometime poop the sticky black poop that is very stinky? It is what they ate or a way to deter predator?

I think they all smell bad, but my chickens have darker to black poo after picking the blackberry bushes clean.

Most of the poop I see from mines are firm in shape, green and white in color and doesn't even smell half as bad as the black sticky poop.

Are you talking about cecal poop?
Thanks

So that's what they're called. I have always wonder why those type of poop were so smelly.

I think it depends on what they eat? It's really frustrating, because I want to feed vegetable and fruit scraps to my chickens, who love that sort of thing (especially watermelon rind) but as soon as they eat that, their poop becomes liquid and smelly. They free-range so it's really annoying when they go and poop all over the deck LOL, if it's dry poop I can simply sweep it away but runny poop makes a huge mess.

Hi sorry to resurrect a old topic.

My broody hen who has just hatched quite a few chicks has been having very large charcoal black poops which are very very smelly, smells like horse poop, just checking if this is normal? She hasnt been eating berries or anything like that shes just on chick crumble. The poop is so smelly thought!
