My big fluffy Buff Orpington has an accumulation of dried waste matter that has stuck to her feathers in the vent area. I noticed it had gotten worse rather than better, so I went out with some sharp shop scissors to try and clear it off. I could hardly cut through it as some pine shavings had also stuck to the mess. I did manage cutting some off but not enough! I then filled a squeeze bottle with warm water and soaked the area with it. What a stinky mess. Does anyone have a good method of clearing this out without hurting the poor girl. She's going on 8 months and don't know when her 1st molt will be and will the clear the problem or will it continue to happen because of all that fluff?

I had a Barred Rock that used to get that way. About every month or so I would put her in the sink and run warm water on her butt. After I got most of it out I would wash with a little Johnson Baby shampoo and rinse. I would pat dry with paper towel and use a blow dryer until dry. She always seemed to enjoy her spa treatment....

The first time it took two of us. one to hold her and one to wash. After that she would just stand there and go to sleep...
